Charles Sidebottom Director, Corporate Standards, Medtronic Inc.

Mr. Sidebottom received a B.Sc. degree in electrical engineering in 1968 from Iowa State University and a M.Sc. in electrical engineering from the University of Missouri in 1979. He is a registered professional engineer.

Medtronic, a Minnesota based company, is a global leader in medical healthcare technologies. Mr. Sidebottom joined Medtronic in 1980 and held a number of management positions in information technology and software product development before joining the regulatory affairs organization in 1992. He is a Technical Fellow and a Distinguished Standards Advisor in Medtronic’s Global Regulatory Affairs organization.

In his current position, Mr. Sidebottom is responsible for Medtronic's corporate standards program. He represents Medtronic at national and international standards organizations on standards matters affecting the medical device industry. Heavily involved in international standards work since 1987, Mr. Sidebottom serves as Secretary to the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) subcommittee (SC) 62A, Common aspects of electrical equipment used in medical practice, Secretary of International Standards Organization (ISO) subcommittee ISO/TC 150/SC 5, Osteosynthesis and spinal devices, and is the Secretary of ASTM Committee F04. He serves as a U.S. delegate to the ISO working group on symbols, definitions, and nomenclature for medical devices, the ISO working group on fundamental standards for implantable products, the ISO/IEC joint working group on pacemakers, and the ISO/IEC joint working group on application of risk management to medical devices. He is active as an IEC observer in the work of the CEN/CENELEC Joint Working Group on Active Implantable Medical Devices that is developing European standards under the auspices of the European Union.
